Cardiff will welcome the initial fixture of UEFA's tournament, while penultimate matches and final are set for the iconic English venue

Nine locations in four co-hosts - multiple British isles nations - will stage the European championship

Fixtures were originally planned for the northern territory, but that stadium option was dropped due to financial constraints

The governing body's selection to stage the opening match in the Welsh capital was finalized as the tournament was officially launched on midweek

"This marks the first time that '{The Red Wall' - our loyal followers - will witness a major international tournament on native ground," stated Welsh football governing body chief executive Noel Mooney

Different from previous Euros, participating countries must secure entry for the 2028 tournament, though they would be promised to play their group games on home turf if they earn automatic entry

The participating countries will each be in different qualification pools, with two spots also designated for the highest-ranked of those sides who don't make it through standard entry paths

Event Organization

Elite stage games will be held at the Welsh national venue, Dublin's Aviva Stadium, Glasgow's Hampden Park and London's iconic venue - which had earlier staged penultimate and championship matches in the 1996 edition and for the delayed 2020 edition

Manchester's venue, where the English side would start their journey if they secure immediate qualification, before switching to the national stadium, is one of five other stadiums being employed in England

North London's venue, Villa Park, Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium and St James' Park are the others that will be utilized across the total fixtures throughout the tournament

Financial Benefits

The British authorities says it is investing £557m to stage the tournament but expects a return of £3.2bn due to job creation, area improvement and benefits from international visitors

"Euro 2028 will be the most significant occasion ever co-organized by the host countries and, as a lifelong football fan, I know how much international competitions like this count," commented government head

With an average stadium capacity of just under sixty thousand, UEFA estimates that more supporters than ever before will experience fixtures at a European Championship finals

Local Reactions

The Football Association's chief executive commented: "The scale of the tournament will have a really positive impact on local areas nationwide"

The parallel leader at the national organization, the association head, stated: "The passionate followers are renowned for their dedication and we await offering them, as well as the countless tourists who will travel to the nation for the championship, with the kind of memorable occasion that they will always remember"

The chief of the Scottish governing body, the association official, commented: "People discuss about the power of football and the effect it can generate on a daily basis across the nation, far beyond the confines of a pitch"

The entry selection will happen in Belfast on 6 December 2026
