This approach is most effective for compact containers and varieties averse to overwatering, like orchids. Yet, the majority of tropical foliage plants are averse to the cold. A plant's roots evolved for warmth, and icy water can stress or harm them. Room conditions is a big factor in the hack's efficacy: in a heated room, the ice will thaw very quickly, giving scant value, whereas in a colder area it may linger too long, chilling the roots and reducing water uptake.
