Shot-stopper Mary Earps has openly declared that her freshly launched memoir was never intended to “criticize individuals” and voiced unease that audience feedback has been “misrepresented.”

Disputed Remarks and Public Criticism

The retired international goalkeeper, who had a vital part in the Euro 2022 victory, encountered disapproval from followers and Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor after commenting about former team-mate Hannah Hampton and manager Sarina Wiegman.

In her autobiography, Earps reportedly claimed told Wiegman she was “supporting poor attitude” by bringing Hampton back to the national team after dropping her for being “problematic and undependable.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how some things have been distorted,” Earps shared in an interview.

Defending Her Intentions

Earps strongly emphasized that her book was not meant to hurt others.

• “I’ve not written this book to criticize others in any manner.”
• “That is not who I am as a human being.”
• “This reflects reality. It has consequences. It is not entertainment.”

She also discussed how female soccer has moved into an area that has become “a bit like entertainment,” where private matters are analyzed in detail for people’s enjoyment.

Relationship with Wiegman

Earps mentioned losing her spot as the first-choice keeper before the European Championship and how that created tension with Wiegman.

She explained it was “not a rapid decline” in their dynamic—just a clash of viewpoints—and she still respects the manager.

“Several incidents that happened in the summer that I wish had happened differently,” Earps added.

Personal Struggles

In her memoir, Earps discussed openly the mistreatment she experienced at during her education, describing it as a “particularly challenging” section to read again because it revived past pain.

• “I didn’t stand up back then.”
• “I just assumed that people disapproved of me for a long time.”
• “I was trained to feel like no one truly cared.”

These sentiments led to panic attacks, and Earps disclosed she had issues with body image and resorted to drinking during the lockdown period to handle mental health struggles.

Relationships and Goals

Earps publicly revealed that she is in a same-sex relationship and stated she is proud about her partnership.

She also discussed her desire to be a mother and revealed she has undergone egg freezing for later fertility treatment.

“I really want to be a parent and have a family of my own,” Earps commented. “I love playing football, but I hope to have a child at a later stage.”

Earps described the egg-freezing procedure as “crazy and invasive” and advocated for more investigation tailored to players undergoing similar procedures.

In her statements, Earps maintained that she has no second thoughts about her sports path or life decisions, highlighting that she always behaved honestly.
