New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
