New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately after his victory in November.

"My choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he said.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his central policy – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he is from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a venue for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
