Stupidity and Monarchical Hubris Damaged Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet
This episode commenced with a solitary photograph, arguably the most consequential ever taken of a royal family member.
Present was the Earl of Inverness, arm-in-arm a young woman, while another individual grinned knowingly in the backdrop.
Absent that photograph, shot at a social event in 2001, few would have credited the assertions of a teenager who said she was trafficked across the ocean and forced to have perfunctory relations with a member of the monarchy?
A strange, telling gesture by someone who had openly stated to have no been aware of her, said he could no have had sex with her, and yet provided millions of monarchical resources to resolve a drawn-out legal case.
A Long Period of Scandal
Considering this, discussions of the royals acting decisively to sever ties with Andrew are inaccurate. This scandal has endured for the largest portion of 15 years since that image, and another snapshot of Andrew walking pleasantly with a disgraced financier surfaced.
- Arrogance: How long did his family members, possibly even his mother and father, realize that Andrew was so arrogant?
- Dubious Friendships: They must have known, if his aides and the authorities were fulfilling their roles, that he had some deeply disreputable companions given he publicly hosted them to royal residences.
- Monetary Excess: If the household did not know about his sexual proclivities, they certainly knew about his overspending with taxpayer funds.
Travel were listed in public records: chopper flights from the royal residence to a country club and back again in time for midday meal, chartered planes instead of commercial flights, all for the convenience of "the travel enthusiast".
World of Deference
Then there was the presumption which expected deference when he walked into a area or the extreme consciousness about his honorifics used on his letterheads in letters to his associates.
He could get away with it while his matriarch, who strangely indulged him, was still living. The Queen did at least revoke him of royal responsibilities and military positions in the wake of his catastrophic and, it is now clear, deceptive television interview six years ago.
Recent Developments
Merely in the last 14 days that events accelerated, following the issuance of accounts giving more grim particulars of his behavior and that of his connections.
Additional revelations have again revealed Andrew's thinking that he could get away with deceiving about his relationship with a notorious figure.
Society (and the press) were far in advance of the monarchy. There was not a single person of any importance to support him, a result of all those years of presumption.
Monarchical Concerns
The more intelligent monarchical figures recognized that. The one imperative is to pass on the monarchy, if not as before at least complete and unblemished.
For generations the last 190 years trying to undo the reputation of past sovereigns, proving they are valuable, responsible and reactive to their people.
Andrew was putting all that in danger in an era when deference and privacy is no longer enough.
Aftermath
Eventually, the famously hesitant king was pressured further. There was no alternative. The institution had relinquished authority of the story.
Now it is the loss of honorifics and the continued and life-long social disgrace that will pain Andrew the most.
- Demotion: Demoted to just a commoner
- Historical Precedent: The primary monarch to lose his designations in modern times
- Armed Forces: Especially painful given his duty in the conflict
He is still a royal advisor, on paper able to act for the monarch, and he is still eighth in line to the throne, but none of these will truly occur.
Coming Developments
Can persons he encounters still acknowledge him? Might they still make mistakes and call him Sir? Would they say Andrew,
Of course, he is not retiring to a common area, but to the royal family's large property at Sandringham.
At that location, he will be supplied by the sovereign with one of the estate properties and given some type of personal stipend.
This differs from his previous residence, where he paid a nominal payment for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit distant, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.
Pending Matters
This is not over. There are still records in the hands of overseas authorities to be revealed.
- Political Pressure: Will lawmakers request additional information
- Fiscal Review: Or investigate the misuse of taxpayer funds
- Criminal Investigation: There may even be a police investigation into his actions
Maybe for the time being the institutional damage to the institution is limited. The narrative from the institution was clearly that the stripping of honorifics was what the monarch, and notably other senior royals, sought.
Changed Stance
An end to illusion that Andrew was acting willingly. And, notably, the brief announcement showed clearly that the institution were supporting the accuser's version of events.
Additionally, for the initial instance they eventually showed concern for the affected individuals: "The censures are considered essential, regardless of the fact that he maintains his innocence of the claims against him."
In the end it is entitlement, selfishness and laziness that will kill the crown. In his folly, personal excess and corruption, Andrew gives the impression never to have understood that truth.
