TGA's Future Class Program Appears to Be Finished
Beyond recognizing video games in various award categories, TGA in the past showcased a Future Class. Individuals chosen as part of the Future Class were designed to reflect the “optimistic, daring, and welcoming future” of the games industry, much like how other annual lists highlight influential figures. But, this initiative is coming to an end, per event organizers.
More Than Simply Honor: The Purpose of Future Class
The program was more than a tribute to exceptional figures in the video game community. It functioned as a hub for networking and career development. Although some alumni shared gratitude for their involvement with the program, some felt that the initiative fell short for its cohort. Feedback was directed at various elements of the program, ranging from the lack of assistance to be present at the ceremony to not paying for mentoring recent participants.
Past Issues and Program Suspension
Future Class seemed to be suspended in the current year, when TGA omitted the award from its schedule. This omission came after a 2023 controversy where a number of those in the program endorsed a open letter calling on the ceremony to leverage its influence to advocate for a particular global crisis.
"We were given the role of ambassadors of a brighter tomorrow — as such, our obligation towards you and all the players globally drives us to voice our views," the letter read.
It also argued that the video game sector frequently marginalized Black and brown people, and called on professionals in the field to improve.
Official Announcement and Website Updates
Though this is the second consecutive year that TGA has not selected a Future Class, program organizers had not officially announced its end previously. The absence has been observed, in part, due to the obvious deletion of all references of Future Class on the TGA’s official site. The show creator and producer did not immediately respond to a media inquiry.
Next year’s Game Awards are planned for December 11.
