As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
