The President Invites Relatives of Attacked National Guard Members to White House
Former President Donald Trump revealed on Sunday that he has extended an invitation the relatives of a National Guard member killed last week to visit the executive mansion.
He added that he spoke to her parents and they were “deeply grieving”.
Background on the Heartbreaking Event
Soldier Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a shooting on Wednesday in DC.
Her fellow service member, Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, is still in the hospital in serious condition.
Vigils across West Virginia have occurred in their remembrance.
Presidential Call
The commander-in-chief stated he’s proposed a meeting at the presidential residence for the loved ones of both individuals of the West Virginia Guard.
“I told them: ‘When you’re prepared, because that’s a difficult moment, visit the White House. We’re going to pay tribute to Sarah,” Trump addressed journalists. “And similarly with Andrew, no matter the outcome.”
Public Reaction
Mourners came together over the past few days at a local school in West Virginia to honor Beckstrom.
Both she and Wolfe had been working with the state guard as part of the president’s national effort to aid law enforcement in Washington DC.
Paying Tribute to Beckstrom
“Sarah was the type of pupil that educators wished for. She behaved with inner fortitude, a contagious smile and a positive energy that inspired people around her,” the principal, the head of Beckstrom’s previous school, informed the media. “She was kind, caring and always ready to help others.”
Memorial arrangements for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Judicial Measures and Government Changes
Officials have charged a twenty-nine-year-old Afghan national with one count of homicide and charges of assault with intent to kill while armed.
The incident prompted the administration to halt asylum processing and cease providing visas to holders of travel documents.
Status of the Airman
Wolfe, a resident of the city, started his military career in 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of his local high school, as reported by the Associated Press.
He continues to receive treatment and is “battling to survive”, the state’s leader Patrick Morrisey said on Fox News Channel’s The Sunday Briefing.
The state’s top lawyer the attorney general stated on the program that she planned to speak to the family.
Memory of Beckstrom
Beckstrom, from her hometown, completed her education from Webster County High in 2023 and began her service not long after, working as a military police officer with distinction, per the state guard.
“She had a lot of compassion and she certainly had courage,” the governor addressed the crowd at the service. “Though her life lasted far too short, she has left a mark that’s going to endure.”
