Triple NBA MVP Nikola Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" knee injury while the Denver Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself towards the end of the second quarter in an accidental contact with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

His teammate landed on the footwear of the big man, who promptly went down to the ground grabbing his leg.

The star, who is leading the league this season in rebounds and dimes, had a score of 21 points and eight assists in the contest before incurring the setback.

He is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury.

"Immediately, Jokic knew he was hurt," stated Denver coach Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Whoever that gets hurt, it's tough to see, especially somebody as important as he is. More information will come on Tuesday."

"We will continue together. Of course, currently, I am more worried primarily about Jokic as a person and the disappointment of going through a situation like that."
