Ultra-Conservative Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile New President.
In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Resounding Win
After over 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his staunch socially conservative views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely built on promises to address rising violence and drastically curb migration.
He repeatedly pointed to foreigners, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the campaign, he issued an final demand for them to leave before the new term begins or face deportation.
His proposals envisioned controversial measures such as erecting detention centers, border walls, security fences, and increasing the military presence on the northern frontier.
Within a Regional Shift
Many commentators interpret Kast's win as fitting into a broader rightward trend in the region, following recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts further view it as a continuation of the established swing of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Solid Majority
Despite his clear electoral win, Kast does not command an absolute majority in the legislature, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when various right-leaning parties are combined together.
This legislative situation could complicate his agenda, including a promise to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not detailed concrete steps.
"There are numerous aspects about what a Kast government will look like that are uncertain because he has not detailed the way he will do them," noted a political science professor.
The professor continued, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. However where there is considerably less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his central theme across the campaign."
