A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.
